Join us for this film screening on World Oceans Day and the opening night of the Sunshine Coast Ocean Festival. SPECIAL GUEST: Heather Conn, local writer, editor and educator, will join us to provide a glimpse into her visit to Lombok Sea Turtle Conservation Centre in Indonesia in 2025.
In the late 1970s, Satish Bhaskar embarked on an epic journey along India’s coastlines and the spectacular Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he uncovered the vital nesting beaches of sea turtles. During his death-defying quest, he unravelled mysteries surrounding these enigmatic ocean creatures and set out to save them from extinction. After a devastating tsunami struck in 2004, Bhaskar grapples with a pressing question: What happens to sea turtles when their nesting beaches disappear?
The inspiring tale of Satish Bhaskar and the giant sea turtles he loves, a stunning example of a life dedicated to citizen science. WATCH the trailer. From the director: “Turtle Walker began when two childhood friends decided to combine their mutual passions – the ocean and filmmaking – to tell an important story. Their hope is that this film will encourage people the world over to take action for marine conservation.”
A Turtle Walker travels across long distances of wild and uncertain coastlines on foot, in the hopes of spotting a turtle. They often embark on these strenuous walks with very little guarantee of reward.
Yet their zeal for discovery is what allows them to thrive in their search for these creatures. It is this passion that binds together the stories of turtle walkers across generations.
